I’ve got a shelf full of them-probably 70 or more-ranging from missionary biographies to Presidential, sports heroes, and cultural icons. The kids loved this first foray into the world of biographies, and I feel like the pump might be primed for us now to pursue another biography in a similar vein. This first selection was so simple that we finished its 95 pages in just two evenings. While I know the kids truly enjoyed the Little House series (which, though similar to biography, probably isn’t exactly), we’ve been focusing our attention mostly on books of adventure or humor and have left off “real-life” books for far too long. Still, this particular choice scratched two very important itches for our family when we read it together last week.įirst, biography is a genre that’s been conspicuously absent from our family reading time for years. It’s clearly designed for elementary-aged kids: the conversations and “suspense” are light, the font is large, and the illustrations are pretty childish. This short Scholastic biography of Helen Keller is about as simplistic as you can get when it comes to recording the life of an American icon.

Several bands have adapted Howard's works to tracks or entire albums. Howard is an ongoing inspiration for and influence on heavy metal music. Howard-related comic books continued to be published to the present day. The first comic book adaptation was in the Mexican Cuentos de abuelito - La reina de la Costa Negra #8 (1952). The first table-top roleplaying game based on Howard's works was TSR's " Conan Unchained!" (1984) for their game Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Computer games have focussed on Conan, beginning with Conan: Hall of Volta (1984) and continuing on to the MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (2008). Multiple audio dramas have been adapted, from professional audio books and plays to LibriVox recordings of works in the public domain. In television, the anthology series Thriller (1961) led the adaptations with an episode based on the short story "Pigeons from Hell." The bulk of the adaptations have, however, been based on Conan with two animated and one live action series. In addition to the Conan films, other adaptations have included Kull the Conqueror (1997) and Solomon Kane (2009). In more recent times, magicians and mesmerists have wowed audiences by seeming to float by the powers of thought alone. And many ancient religions have age-old accounts of ascetic saints hovering in sublime ecstasy. Many traditional societies have deep-rooted shamanic traditions of spirit and dream flight. Early modern scientists believed in the force of levity as an opposite to that of gravity. As he shows, many people have been certain that it is absolutely possible to float unaided. Sure, anyone can fly these days so long as they have a credit card and government-issued ID, but what does it take to perform that more fundamental magic, to levitate? In this fascinating book, Peter Adey hovers over the peculiar stories of those who have dreamed of, believed in, or-can you believe your eyes-practiced levitation, offering a wide-ranging history of a unique phenomenon that can be found in countless cultures.Īs Adey argues, levitation is best thought of as a pre- or parallel pursuit to that of aviation-but one that doesn’t cheat by employing aeronautical machinery.
